What Happens in the 12 days of Mourning?

Specific dates have yet to be finalized and planning is still underway, with responses expected in the coming days.

But the established procedures and the first press releases can help to know part of the next commemorations.

Here’s the day-by-day account of what’s expected to happen next, ahead of the Queen’s funeral in about 11 days.

Day of death

Thursday would traditionally have been D-Day or D+0 in plans for the aftermath of the Queen’s death, codenamed London Bridge.

But the announcement came late, around 6:30 p.m. m. on Thursday 8th September, which means that the plans were changed one day to allow complex fixes to be implemented, which means that D+0 will be considered on Friday.

What happens when the Queen dies?

In memory of her. Following the news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death at the age of 96, the UK officially enters a 12-day period of mourning.

Buckingham Palace confirmed on Thursday, September 8, that the longest-reigning British monarch in history had passed away.

News of her death came shortly after doctors placed Elizabeth under “medical supervision” due to growing concerns about her health.

Known as Operation London Bridge, plans for how the country would react after the queen’s death were first laid out in the 1960s.

In the years since then, they have been updated several times.

While the queen herself contributed to some of the preparations before her death, many details were set in motion by her heir, Prince Charles.

National mourning protocol

More modern details have also been considered in recent years, such as changing the royal family’s social media profile pictures to pay tribute to the late monarch.

During the mourning period, staff uniforms will change. Comedy shows on the BBC will be cancelled, and the British economy is likely to take a hit as the country goes through a period of great turmoil.

Before her death, the monarch celebrated her 70th year of service with her family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to enjoy Trooping the Color on June 2.
