What happens when the Queen turns 100?

After an unprecedented 70 years on the throne, Elizabeth II’s reign ended on September 8.

The Queen is 96 years old at the time of her death and she is the longest serving monarch in British history.

She has been on the throne for 70 years, and one wonders what celebrations would take place if Her Majesty turned 100 in four years.

The age milestone was reached by the Queen Mother, who lived to be 101 years old. And the Queen’s aunt, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, lived to be 102 years old.

So what could potentially happen on such an occasion?

Queen birthday celebration

The Queen Mother’s 100th birthday was publicly celebrated with a special parade in her honor in 2000.

The Queen Mother was escorted by her grandson, Prince Charles, to the Horse Guards Parade for the event, and was attended by other members of the Royal Family and military regiments.

The parade was dubbed a “people’s tribute” to the Queen Mother, and marching bands, carnival floats, dancers, and orchestras took part in the proceedings.

The Queen is likely to receive a show of similar proportions when she turns 100.

The Queen’s birthday is already celebrated every June with Trooping the Colour, but the 2026 event would likely be extra special given the importance of her reaching triple digits.

The Queen Mother’s 100th birthday in 2000 coincided with the dawn of a new millennium, and unique commemorative coins were released for the occasion.

A commemorative £5 coin was minted by the Royal Mint to mark the milestone and was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley who also designed an earlier coin portrait of the current Queen.

The Queen Mother’s centenary was also celebrated with a commemorative £20 note.

Without a doubt, the Trooping The Color parade on the Queen’s official birthday, in which the Royal Family appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, would be very special.

Queen Elizabeth age 2027

There is also expected to be a huge celebration on that day with RAF parades and airshows. Special currency and postage stamps may be issued to commemorate the moment along with recurring television shows and documentaries about the royals.

Following the Queen’s arrival at this historic age, TV shows could include documentaries on the Queen Mother’s arrival at age 100 to draw comparisons.

The Queen Mother died when she was 101 years old, so Queen Elizabeth II would be following in her footsteps if she reaches the great age of 100.
